Architect Scott McGlashan of McGlashan Architecture designed this gorgeous, contemporary hillside home in Mill Valley, California, for an extended family of three generations to share. Natural wood throughout is stained to highlight its natural tone. Tiles of varied stone appear on floors, and stone bricks adorn walls. The double-thick counters in the kitchen and bathroom further enhance the home’s sense of earth-inspired luxury. The round skylight in the kitchen serves as a gorgeous architectural detail while naturally lighting the space. A lovely, contemporary staircase design juxtaposes the natural with the urban: from above the staircases boasts beautiful natural hardwood details, while a view from beneath reveals unique steel detail reminiscent of the industrial era, with a modern twist.

Along the crown of a long oval shaped bluff range that extends to 30 miles is the place where the Bluff House is situated and was designed by Bruns Architecture . The house approaching the former logging road carving by passing through the rhythmic woodland part that is in the site, the silhouette of the building slowly comes to vision from the green and dense vegetation in the place. There is a concrete wall that separates the residents who enter the garage from the guests who enter from the entry door made of wood. A circulation gallery invites the visitor straight into the main hall that also leads to the storage walkout. The plan also includes dining room, kitchen and also to extended the views of the house to make it grow into the forest to make the house a bluff in the forest.

Minton Hill House is design by Affleck + de la Riva Architects. The Minton Hill House strikes a delicate balance between the engaging of its panoramic hilltop position and the provision of a protective domestic environment. The house is at once an environmental filter, a view-framing device, and a series of interior and exterior gardens and courts. The project is composed of four essential elements – the roof, the stone hearth, the wood shell, and the sun window. Celebrating the house’s hilltop position with a spread-wing profile, the floating roof is the project’s defining symbol. Its generous southern overhang provides the solar control of a vernacular Eastern Townships farmhouse in a contemporary architectural form.

Located on the west side of Mercer Island, Washington, this house is a reconstruction of one of iconic Seattle architect Fred Bassetti’s earliest designs built in 1962. Fronting a busy street, we wanted to root the house to its sloping wooded site and provide a protective shelter for family life. The plan is opened up allowing for large family gathering spaces and perspectives throughout the full length of the house. A new metal skin with interior cedar liner wraps over the roof and grounds the house to the site. An aluminum bar grating screen encloses an exterior patio and deck filtering interior views and forming a sparkling and diaphanous wall from the street. The entry approach is redesigned with a cantilevered concrete landing in a sunken courtyard and a 4″ x 11″ pivot door to the interior. Bathing spaces are ethereally bright, smooth and seamless. Materials throughout are natural but installed and crafted in an extremely crisp manner.

One piece of furniture trickery standing upright on only two legs, this pair of Shadow Chairs by British designer Chris Duffy seems to defy everything we knew about gravity. It looks like the lack of back legs is being substituted by the apparent black shadow that is part of the chair’s metal frame and functions as its base. A creative composition that is made from walnut wood and steel, the Shadow Chairs retail for something close to $1,200, but there’s no assurance the average American won’t break it. However it does the job right in fooling your guests – at least for the first time.

This stilt house, the Froschkonig Treehouse by treehouse architects Baumraum, sits among the treetops of this private garden in Munster, Germany. Steps lead residents and guests through the lily pad-covered pool to the base of this stilt house, where a wood and steel staircase leads up to a tatajuba-wood terrace. This contemporary wood clad house in the sky features a modern, curved shape. A large picture window on each end of the home and a skylight brighten interiors while lending a transparency and a connection to the outdoors. Inside this compact home design, minimalist interiors boast walls, floors and furniture of white-glazed ash. The curved ceilings follow with the interesting home’s overall shape.
